Just goes to show how poor Wales, NI and Scotland and the Republic are. How can England be rated 10th and also be 2nd favoutites to win the World Cup? Bet of the World cup for me is to back the Netherlands at 17.50 and lay off later in the tournament (Hopefully). |

it's because teams like the USA and Mexico play most of there internationals against countries with smaller populations than Kings Heath. How Spain aree in the top 10 is beyond me. The Czech Republic are always rated higher than they should be - no idea why? |

Its only because Brazil/Argey Bargeys/Mexico/USA only play teams from their area, teams that have a best player equivalent to martin taylor's left foot |

the rankings are worked out based on a number a different factors. they looks at things like opposition, venue, goals scored/conceded, and importance of match. Basic rules are something like this (for results only!): A v. D (large difference in teams' strengths): if A wins then A:+1.00 and D:+1.00 if Draw then A:0 and D:+2.00 if D wins then A:-1.00 and D:+3.00 B v. C (little difference in teams' strengths): if B wins then B:+1.90 and C:+0.10 if Draw then B:+0.90 and C:+1.10 if C wins then B:-0.10 and C:+2.10 A1 v. A2 (teams of equal strength): if A1 wins then A1:+2.00 and A2:0 if Draw then A1:+1.00 and A2:+1.00. Basically a 1-0 win for england over someone like albania will earn england 1pt, and albania 1pt. Where as, a 0-0 draw between Brazil and N.Ireland, would earn brazil nothing, whereas N.Ireland would get 2pts. Obviously there are other things, such as: A bonus of +0.3 points is awarded to the away team, but teams winning a match on neutral ground receive no bonus points, and also the impotance of the match (friendlies earn less than continental championship matches, and continental championship matches earn less than World Cup games. rules can be found here and here It means that a nation can;t go on playing, and beating all the smaller nations to get to the top. To be honest, it seems a fair way of doing things!
England may be technically better than some of those teams, but the others obviously played bigger and better teams and got better results. even if they don;t get a win against a stronger team, they still pick up points. Its not their fault, we're pretty sh1te. We're there because we had results like 4-1 loss v denmark, 1-0 loss against ireland, only beat austria 1-0. |

It does make sense to give teams extra points for beating higher placed teams but what about high ranking teams that field understrengh teams? Example. Germany 4 - 1 USA (about 1 month ago) USA fielded a bunch of kids for this match, so it was hardly a tough test. Do Germany get the full quota of points because they beat 'technically' a better side? I wonder if they factor these sort of situations in? |

the top 3 should really be Brazil, Argentina then England. how did a team like Nigeria get so high up, when they've not even qualified for the World Cup  |

i'm not sure, theres a lot of stuff to read through! From what i can see, they base it on the teams current points and not the actual strength of the team. Currently USA have 760pts, Germany 699pts, so from what you said about germany they would probably have gained more points by beating the weaker, but 'technically' better/stronger, higher placed USA. They do take into consideration teams that are similar in strength, and award less points, but not sure how close the teams need to be to be classed as similar. |

germany equal 19th, at home in the world cup and with a decent record in the tournament - somebody is mentally disturbed imo at fifa. for a more accurate assessment of the respective chances this world cup watch what the bookies reckon in about 45 days time.. ;) |

i'm a bit surprised why Australia arent up there, i mean they are in a similar situation to the USA, where they rarely play difficult opposition. |

Thanks Funky. My only worry about the FIFA rankings is the amount of "history" that is contained in the points. I'm not sure if its changed, but the system used to go on for years, so a new revitalised team like Japan (for the sake of argument) would take forever to catch up with Brazil or Argentina. Like Wales under Hughes had some good results, but hardly moved up the table. I know a lot of people look at it as if its a league table or something similar, but I think its much more involved and many journalists especially miss that point. As you have meticulously pointed out. Thanks **thumbup |

its quite bizzare really becasue its like USA and them silly 'soccer' countries seem to play more than eurpean teams like UK for example england, wales N.I. and ROI so off course they would be higher of they are always playing............... ..........seems like they are trying keep up with our football league teams  |

They're only 2nd favourites on bookies from Britain and Ireland The top 10 (maybe USA aside, but they've qualified for more tournaments consecutively than England have... think of that before answering) are about right - England aren't a top 3 nation despite what the Sun might tell you. |

And to correct you here - Wales moved from 108th to 32nd in a season under Mark Hughes. If thats "hardly moving up the table" - then christ I hope Blues "hardly move up the table" in years to come. |

I believe (and correct me please if I'm wrong) Czech Republic scored the most goals in qualifying in Europe. Czech Republic made the final of the last tournament (Euro04) Get over it, there ARE teams better than England you know. England are over-rated by the media, FIFA have it about right there - I'll be proved right when they lose in the 2nd round/quarter final again this year - therefore putting them between 8th and 16th in the world. No doubt, it'll be the referee's fault. Again   |

Apologies - early morning stuff there Meant semi final - lost to greece I believe? Complete lack of respect from England fans here - the nations above England are there on merit, about time England fans stopped swallowing the crap the Sun put out about how England are destined to win it this time etc. It gets rather boring after the 5th time. |

spot on, i don't believe England have ever been 2nd favourite for any tournament, other than when we hosted Euro 96 and The world Cup in 66. kids  |
